Who Is a Good Candidate for IPL Therapy?

Chronic dry eye can involve more than a lack of moisture. For many patients, symptoms develop because the oil-producing meibomian glands are blocked or inflamed. When these glands cannot release enough healthy oil, tears evaporate too quickly and leave the eyes feeling irritated.

Intense pulsed light, commonly called IPL therapy, is an in-office treatment that may help address inflammation and poor meibomian gland function. However, determining whether someone is a good candidate requires a complete dry eye evaluation.

Patients With Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

Meibomian gland dysfunction, or MGD, is one of the primary conditions treated with IPL therapy. The meibomian glands line the eyelids and produce the protective oil layer of the tear film.

When these glands become clogged, tears may evaporate before they can properly lubricate the eyes. IPL uses controlled light energy around the eyelids to reduce inflammation and support healthier gland function.

Signs IPL Therapy May Be Appropriate

Patients may be considered for IPL treatment when they experience persistent symptoms such as:

•          Burning, stinging, or gritty sensations

•          Red or watery eyes

•          Fluctuating or blurry vision

•          Sensitivity to light

•          Discomfort while wearing contact lenses

•          Symptoms that return shortly after using artificial tears

•          Dryness that worsens with screens, wind, or air conditioning

These symptoms do not automatically mean IPL is the right treatment. They indicate that an evaluation may be needed to identify the underlying cause.

Ocular Rosacea and Eyelid Inflammation

People with ocular rosacea may also be good candidates for IPL therapy. Ocular rosacea can cause visible blood vessels, chronic redness, eyelid irritation, and inflammation that interferes with normal tear production.

IPL treatment can target abnormal blood vessels around the eyes that contribute to inflammation. It may also help patients whose dry eye is associated with inflammatory eyelid conditions, bacteria, or Demodex mites.

When Eye Drops Are Not Providing Enough Relief

Artificial tears can provide temporary lubrication, but they do not clear blocked glands or directly address eyelid inflammation. Patients who use drops frequently without lasting improvement may benefit from a more targeted dry eye treatment.

IPL is often incorporated into a personalized treatment plan alongside lid hygiene, warm compresses, prescription medications, thermal therapies, or other treatments. The recommended approach depends on the type and severity of dry eye.
